Philosophy at °µÍø³Ô¹Ï invites you to explore ideas that shape human experience, from ethics and politics to identity, knowledge, and reality itself.

You’ll engage with influential thinkers across history and examine how philosophical arguments are constructed, challenged, and applied. Through debate, analysis, and critical writing, you’ll develop skills that matter in every sector: clarity, logic, and the confidence to engage with complex questions.

Discover Key Philosophers

Our programmes explore the ideas of key figures in the history of philosophy, including Plato, Descartes, Nietzsche, Sartre, and Wittgenstein. You can study original texts from philosophers of both the past and present to help you learn to develop and defend your own arguments, which can help you gain skills that are transferable and equip you for a range of career paths. During our programmes, you can explore ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, epistemology, logic, philosophy of religion, feminist philosophy, Indian philosophy, philosophy of love and sex, legal and political philosophy, and  philosophy of science.

Get Involved

°µÍø³Ô¹Ï is home to the °µÍø³Ô¹Ï Philosophy Salon, which holds monthly talks in a local pub from world-leading professional philosophers. This is a thriving organisation with a membership of around 600 people, which provides a great opportunity for students to interact socially with staff and to discuss cutting-edge ideas with some of the most important living philosophers working today.

In addition, the Undergraduate Philosophy Society, which is run by students, organises talks and social events for students interested in Philosophy. We also hold an annual philosophy lecture, bringing a philosopher of international standing to °µÍø³Ô¹Ï to give a talk on a topic of their choosing.
